SSE Business Energy Profile: Tariffs & Reviews

SSE was up until 2020 a member of the big 6 and the third-largest energy supplier in the United Kingdom, supplying approximately 3.5 million customers. As of 2019, they supplied electricity to over 470,000 non-domestic customers.

In 2020, it was announced that SSE had completed the sale of its household energy services business to Ovo in a £500m deal, while retaining control of SSE Business Energy, to continue to supply non-domestic customers in GB.

SSE Business Energy supplies gas and electricity to small, medium and large businesses across the private and public sectors. They have a high level of recognition in the non-domestic market, with a variety of 100% renewable electricity and gas energy plans which are available to both SMEs and large businesses.

Key features:

  • 100% renewable business electricity
  • 100% renewable business gas
  • Fixed tariffs for 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 years
  • Variable tariffs also available
  • Small, medium and large businesses catered for

SSE Core Services

SSE’s core services are gas and electricity supply to small and medium-sized businesses. They also supply large businesses in the public and private sectors.

They offer both traditional and renewable business energy plans, with 100% renewable electricity and gas available.

Unlike some suppliers who produce their own renewables, SSE uses renewable energy certificates to certify that the energy you use comes from 100% renewable sources. This is a common practice among the big 6.

Micro, small, medium and large businesses are offered a smart meter with energy plans, and SSE will handle the installation and setup on your behalf.

Other business energy products from SSE include help with energy efficiency, new connections, energy optimisation and surveys.

The cheapest and easiest way to buy business energy with SSE is with EnergyBillKill – you can get a quote in less than 60 seconds and start your switch the same day.

  • Half hourly 00 profiles (all measurement classes)
  • Gas daily and non-daily metered

SSE Choice (fixed wholesale)

  • Half hourly 00 profiles (all measurement classes)
  • Gas daily and non-daily metered

SSE Green

SSE Green is a 100% renewable energy tariff for electricity and gas contracts. You can choose from a variety of renewable energy plans, with electricity backed by REGOs and gas backed by RGGOs. You can fix these tariffs for up to 3 years.

You can also get enhanced reporting with REGO+, which matches each megawatt you use with a named generating asset for traceability.

SSE Deemed Rates

You will be charged deemed rates if you move into new premises and there is an existing supply, or if you move out of contract, without renewing or cancelling. SSE’s deemed rates are reasonable, but they are considerably higher than contracted rates. Because of this, you should switch to a contract as soon as possible.

Electricity deemed rates

You can find SSE’s latest electricity deemed rates here. That particular table covers non half-hourly and half-hourly deemed rates.

Gas deemed rates

While the table linked above contains gas deemed rates, the data is less complex owing to no discrepancies per quarter. The data is as follows:

Quarterly billed customers in EUC bands 1 or 2:

  • Standing Charge 80.00 pence/day
  • All Day Unit Rate 5.00 p/kWh

Monthly billed customers in EUC bands 1 or 2:

  • Standing Charge 80.00 pence/day
  • All Day Unit Rate 5.00 p/kWh

  • Renewable – 23%
