Opus Business Energy Profile: Tariffs & Reviews

Opus Energy supplies gas and electricity exclusively to businesses. They supply small, medium and large businesses across the United Kingdom.

Opus was founded in 2002 and acquired by Drax Group in 2016. They are now the sixth largest business energy supplier, serving approximately 275,000 customers to break the ‘big six’s’ monopoly. As of January 2020, they had an 8.3% market share of non-domestic energy supply – the most for any independent supplier.

For their good customer service record and historically low prices, Opus has won multiple awards. These include “Utilities Provider of the Year” at the British Small Business Awards, and the “Innovation in Business” award at The Real IT Awards

Key features:

Opus Energy Variable Tariff

Opus’s business energy products also include a variable tariff. You can choose a contract length from one to three years to suit your business. Prices may go up or down, so you may prefer the consistency of a fixed tariff.

  • Rates can go up or down
  • Contract length up to 3 years

Opus Deemed Rates

Deemed rates also mean ‘out of contract’ rates. They apply either when your existing energy deal expires, or when you move into a property and there is an existing supply in place. Opus has competitive deemed rates, although like all suppliers, their deemed rates are considerably more expensive than their contract rates.

Opus’s deemed rates are as follows:

Electricity deemed rates

Standing charge (p/day)

Unit rate (p/kWh)

PC 1-4

PC 5-8

Standing charge (p/day

Unit rate (p/kWh)

Availability p/kVA/day

Low voltage

High voltage

Gas deemed rates

**These rates are accurate as of 22.05.2020.

If you find yourself on deemed rates with Opus, you should switch to Opus Advance or a fixed rate tariff as soon as possible, because deemed rates are always higher than contract rates. Head over to EnergyBillKill.com, or use the free EnergyBillKill app to find the best rates with Opus Energy and get your switch started.

Opus Energy Fuel Mix

Opus Energy sources 100% of its electricity from renewable sources.

Their fuel mix is as follows:

  • Wind power – 72.9%
  • Thermal power – 11.9%
  • Solar power – 7.6%
  • Hydro (water) – 7.6%

And their environmental impact is as follows:

  • CO2 emissions – 0g per kWh

Opus Energy Reviews

Opus Energy is rated average among customer reviews online.

Here’s a breakdown of their ratings across different review platforms:

  • Trustpilot – they have a 2.5/5 star rating based on over 1,000 reviews
  • Review Centre – they have a 1.2/5 star rating based on over 250 reviews

Opus Energy has also been compared to other suppliers for complaints handling:

  • Citizens Advice – Opus Energy was ranked 7th in a table of 16 ranking non-domestic energy suppliers for complaints handling.

How these ratings compare

Opus has an average 2.5/5 star rating on Trustpilot and a poor 1.5/5 star rating on Review Centre. As a comparison, British Gas (one of the big six) has a 3.5/5 rating on Trustpilot and Bulb Energy (a small supplier) has a 5/5 star rating on TrustPilot.

The Citizens Advice data tells us Opus ranks below E.ON, Contract Natural Gas, SSE, EDF, Utility Warehouse, and Total Gas & Power for complaints handling, but above British Gas, Scottish Power, Npower, and Utilita.

Overall, Opus Energy is a trustworthy utility company, but there’s a negative lean with customer reviews that you’ll need to consider.

The biggest counterweight for the negative reviews is they do have a UK based customer service team and contacting them is easy by phone or email. The energy supplied by Opus is also 100% renewable, making them an eco-friendly choice.
