Making Coffee Roasting Green

We Brits love our coffee. So much so, we drink 95 million cups of it a day (and counting)!

As a coffee roaster yourself, this number probably won’t come as a surprise. After all, you roast beans by the bucket load for a reason.

Aside from giving us all a wicked caffeine hit, growing demand for coffee is also having a positive environmental and social effect within the coffee industry.

Thanks to our greater awareness of climate change, the coffee industry is transforming to meet demand in as environmentally friendly a way as possible — and coffee roasting is an area where big improvements are being made.

Efforts to go green

Economy 7 is a type of electricity tariff that gives you discounted electricity for 7 hours during the night. This is an ‘off-peak’ saving that works in the same way as an off-peak train ticket: rates are reduced during hours of lower demand.

The rise of the eco-friendly roaster

Energy efficient roasters can either significantly reduce emissions during the roasting process, or they can reduce the amount of energy they use or use clean energy (or all three of these). The Holy Grail is zero carbon emissions.

The Bellwether Roaster is a good example of an eco-friendly roaster. It’s an electric roaster that uses a special combination of hot air, direct heat and agitation to roast beans. This eliminates the need for ventilation and gas lines, in a process that reduces emissions by up to 90% versus gas-powered alternatives.

There are many more technologies and machines we could use as an example. The key takeaway is that strides are being made to make this area of the coffee supply chain as eco-friendly and socially responsible as possible.

It’s estimated there are 21 grams of CO2 produced by one cup of coffee. Coffee roasters can help reduce this. In 10-20 years, wouldn’t it be great if we could make coffee with a net zero carbon footprint? As Greta Thunberg once said, “the moment we decide to fulfil something, we can do anything”. We think it’s only a matter of time.
